In today’s hospitality landscape, ESG (Environmental, Social & Governance) skills are no longer optional, they’re essential! The hospitality industry faces mounting pressure from consumers, regulators, and investors to demonstrate real sustainability commitments. Guests increasingly choose establishments that minimise environmental impact, champion social responsibility and uphold strong ethical practices. This means workers who understand and can apply ESG principles are more employable and valuable within their organisations.
From reducing energy use and waste to supporting fair labour practices and inclusive workplaces, ESG knowledge equips hospitality professionals to make impactful decisions that benefit both people and the planet. Businesses with strong ESG credentials not only appeal to eco-conscious travellers but also attract motivated staff who want to work for purpose-driven employers. Research shows that sustainability skills can give job candidates a competitive edge and help hospitality businesses innovate and adapt in a rapidly changing market. As the industry evolves, workers with ESG expertise are better positioned for career progression and resilience in roles that blend operational excellence with sustainability leadership.
For ESG principles to be effectively embedded in the hospitality industry, VET providers must themselves be fully equipped with the right knowledge, skills, and practical tools. Trainers and educators play a critical role in translating ESG concepts from theory into real workplace practices, ensuring that sustainability is not treated as an abstract ideal but as a core professional competence. This requires up-to-date understanding of environmental management, social responsibility, ethical governance, and relevant regulatory frameworks, alongside innovative teaching methods that reflect real hospitality settings.
When VET providers are empowered with modern curricula, digital learning resources, and industry-aligned training tools, they can deliver high-quality, practice-oriented education that prepares learners to implement ESG effectively on the job. Strengthening the ESG capacity of VET providers is therefore essential to building a skilled, resilient hospitality workforce capable of driving long-term sustainable change across the sector.
At the heart of this transformation is the EcoSmart Project – empowering sustainable hospitality training, an Erasmus+ initiative designed to equip VET providers and hospitality professionals with the digital and green competencies needed for a sustainable, future-focused sector.
