Young people are the backbone of Europe’s hospitality sector—but sustainable workforce development demands more than just hiring; it requires targeted skills training, career pathways, and sector-wide support.
🔍 Evidence-based insights:
• In 2023, 11 % of tourism industry employees in the EU were young workers aged 15–24, compared with 9 % in the broader services sector (https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php?title=Tourism_industries_-_employment)
• The hospitality sector in Europe supports over 10 million jobs across 2 million businesses, and plays a crucial role in social inclusion and youth employment (https://www.hotrec.eu/media/static/files/import/wp_post_27330/Final-HOTREC-Position-Paper-on-sustainability-in-the-hospitality-sector.pdf?)
• Training young employees in green, digital, and social‑cultural skills boosts productivity and supports sustainability—survey data shows these skill areas are highly valued across hospitality education and employment stakeholders (https://www.mdpi.com/2673-5768/6/1/14? )
🔍 Why this matters:
• Young hospitality workers often enter via entry-level or seasonal roles—but with sustainability skills, they can become leaders in innovation.
• Investing in youth training helps retain talent, supports job quality, and reduces staff turnover in a high‑churn sector.
• Green and digital competencies enable youth to tackle environmental challenges in kitchens, guest services, and operations.
• Inclusive youth training—especially for underrepresented groups—boosts community resilience and local green economies.
Through the Eco Smart Hospitality project, we co-design a circular-hospitality curriculum and digital tools, and pilot learner training in authentic hospitality environments in collaboration with VET providers and employers across Europe.
