At Coffee by Storm, sustainability isn't a side project — it's woven into every part of how the business operates, from the farms where beans are grown to the machines installed in Danish restaurants and offices.
The company's 2024 ESG Report, published in alignment with the EU Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standard for SMEs (VSME), offers a transparent account of where they stand, what they've achieved, and where they still have work to do.
On the environmental side, the numbers tell an encouraging story. Despite growing turnover by 37% since their 2022 baseline, total GHG emissions fell by 8% across all scopes. Their reduction targets have now been validated by the Science Based Target initiative, with a commitment to net zero by 2050. In 2024, 90% of coffee beans sold were certified organic or Rainforest Alliance, and they've set an ambitious target of 25% CO₂-reduced beans by 2025.
Beyond emissions, the report highlights meaningful circular economy work: refurbishing coffee machines for resale, a pilot partnership to turn coffee grounds into biodegradable cups, and sourcing from farms like Fazenda Santa Rosa in Brazil, which has achieved certified CO₂-negative status through regenerative farming practices.
The social dimension extends to the communities at origin. Through their FairCupPartner Program, Coffee by Storm funded an eco-stove for a coffee farming family in Colombia and contributed to a community centre project in Minas Gerais, Brazil, bringing digital access and telemedicine to an isolated village of around 300 coffee farmers.
The report also addresses governance with notable candour, including disclosure of an internal embezzlement case, the steps taken to address it, and the processes put in place to prevent recurrence.
For hospitality businesses thinking about their own supply chain sustainability, this report is worth a read.
